What to Wear for Preschool Photos

Getting a one to five-year-old dressed can sometimes feel like a full-contact sport — especially when you’re aiming for that perfect photo day outfit! Between texture sensitivities, favourite superhero shirts, and tiny but mighty opinions, it can definitely be an adventure.

But don’t worry — we’ve got you covered!

After years behind the camera (and as a mom of three spirited girls), I’ve learned a few tried-and-true tricks to make photo day outfit planning a whole lot easier. These simple tips will help your little one look adorable, feel comfortable, and maybe — just maybe — avoid a morning meltdown.

So, before the outfit negotiations begin, grab your coffee and check out my favourite tips for dressing your preschooler for picture day!

Choosing Clothes for Preschool Photos

Let’s be honest — the best outfit for a preschooler is usually the one they’ll actually wear!

But if you’ve managed to earn a little cooperation (lucky you!), here are some tried-and-true tips to help photo day go off without a hitch:

  • Keep it simple. That adorable cardigan may look amazing in person, but layers can twist, bunch, or slip while we’re trying to snap the perfect shot. Stick to one comfortable layer whenever possible.

  • Go for solids or simple patterns. These photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your child’s smile — not the shirt. Of course, if your little one insists on their superhero gear, let them shine! We love personality in photos.

  • Do a test run. Have your child try on the outfit ahead of time and play in it for a bit. You’ll quickly find out if the straps fall, the tag itches, or the pants suddenly become “too hard.” A quick test saves morning chaos — trust me!

What’s the Best Color to Wear for Preschool Photos?

Since I typically photograph preschoolers against a neutral backdrop (white or gray), most colors look fantastic! You can’t go wrong with your child’s favorite shade or something that fits your family’s overall vibe.

That said — please skip the neon. Bright, highlighter colors don’t photograph or print well and can cast colorful glows on skin (no one wants a green or orange chin!).

Here are a few color style ideas that always look great:

  • Modern: Neutrals (gray, white, black, tan) with a bold pop of color.

  • Earthy: Neutrals with muted oranges, blues, greens, or yellows.

  • Classic Spring: Soft neutrals and pastels.

  • Boho: Warm browns, soft greens, and gentle orange tones.

  • Classic Winter: Crisp whites, deep reds, greens, and blues.

  • Christmas Theme:When we do Photos in November and December we will sometimes have a Chirstmas back drop as an add on option at the photo day

If I ever plan to switch things up with a colorful background (think pink, blue, or tan), I’ll be sure to give you a heads-up ahead of time!

Bonus Tips for Picture Day

A few little extras to make photo day fun and stress-free:

  • Tidy up tiny details. A quick face wipe, brushed hair, and clean hands go a long way — but no need for perfection! We love capturing their real smiles and silly personalities.

  • Skip the big hair accessories. Cute bows and headbands are great — just make sure they don’t cover your child’s face or slip down mid-photo.

  • Bring comfort items. A favorite small toy or stuffy can help shy little ones feel more at ease (and sometimes even sneak into a sweet candid shot).

  • Relax and have fun! Preschool photo day is meant to capture your child just as they are — giggles, dimples, and all.
